(Dr. phil. nat., Dipl.-Chem., M.A.)

Dr. Marc-Michael Blum

German high school degree in Hamburg. At the same time professional training as a lab technician (Chemisch Technischer Assistent, CTA) in a special program of his school. Enrolled in chemistry at the Technical University of Braunschweig. He spent a semester at the University of Birmingham (UK) and conducted part of his diploma thesis research in synthetic organic chemistry at the Humboldt University in Berlin. After graduation with the German diploma degree (Diplomchemiker) he started working as a Ph.D. candidate in the group of Prof. Heinz Rüterjans at the Institute for Biophysical Chemistry at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. The topic of his work was the enzyme diisopropyl fluorophosphatase (DFPase). During this project he was a regular guest at the Armed Forces Scientific Institute for Protection Technologies / NBC-Protection in Munster.

He just finished a masters degree (M.A.) in the distant learning program “War in the modern world” at the department of War Studies – King’s College London. The topic of his thesis: US nuclear modernization an its impact on the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty.

Research Interests:

Development of enzymatic methods for the detoxification of chemical and biological warfare agents, protein chemistry, enzymology, structural biology (X-ray and neutron diffraction) and computational chemistry (Molecular Modelling, MD-simulations, quantum-mechanical calculations). In addition to this he has a strong interest in the elucidation of enzyme mechanisms and enzyme engineering.

Defense and security policy: Weapons of mass destruction and carrier systems, especially their (non)-proliferation, arms control and nuclear strategy.
